Saving A River In Danger

NYRI announces a power transmission project with a possible route following the railroad rights of way along the Delaware River. The project is very similar to the proposed Pegasus Transmission Company project. In fact, Richard Muddiman (former President of Pegasus Transmission Company) is listed as the President of NYRI on the request for early designation as a National Interest Electric Transmission Corridor filed with the Department of Energy.

The Upper Delaware Preservation Coalition opposes the construction of the New York Regional Interconnect for several reasons. We feel the power lines will destroy the natural scenic beauty of the Upper Delaware River Valley resulting in severe economic losses in our region and any revenue generated to individual townships by this project will be outweighed by the decline in property values and loss of tourism related revenues.

NYRI refuses to identify its private funding sources yet they state that this project is vital to national security. It is our contention that a project impacting national security must name its funding sources and active involvement of all individuals in the company to assure the people of this nation that this project does not include the interests or involvement of any person who may affect our national or regional security.

In addition, the proposed NYRI route along the river would be visible to our scenic byways negatively impacting the use of these byways further damaging the economic base of the Upper Delaware Corridor.

NYRI has set a late May 2006 deadline to finalize its proposed route.

Please check our website for ways that you can help to stop this project. In the meantime, please contact your elected representatives in local, state and federal government and tell them "no power lines in the Upper Delaware Valley"
